Today was our chance to get to know Einstein better. We walked to the Bern Historic Museum and took the Einstein audio tour. We had to watch out for pirates when crossing the river.

Arr! |
And we had to be ever so careful to watch our feet, and keep in the squares (which is no mean feat on the cobblestone street).

One of Bern's many bears |
The museum is styled as a 15th century Swiss castle, but is only just over a century old.

Impressive mosaic over the entrance |
The mirror staircase that leads up to the exhibition is intriguing - mirrors on walls, floor and ceiling of the stairwell.

Escher woz ere too! |
The museum's not large, but the Einstein tour takes about an hour and a
half after which one has a much better appreciation of what he was like
as a person. (The tale of Albert's rules for his first wife reminded me
of an
old engineering joke. Although its pretty clear that the marriage had broken down completely by then.) It's too easy to focus on Einstein's most brilliant works and ignore the impact he had on science and politics.
